ACC Tourney Betting Preview: Hurricanes And Seminoles Quarterfinals
The ACC is considered by most to be the best college basketball conference in the country. Bettors routinely have a hard time picking winners in a conference that sends an average of five to seven teams a year to the NCAA Tournament. This season, the league will again send that many teams to the Big Dance, but which teams go is the surprising part. The Florida State Seminoles and Miami Hurricanes have been brought to the ACC with the hopes of building the conferences reputation in football. Over the past couple of years, however, the Hurricanes and Seminoles have shown that they can also build competitive basketball teams.Florida State has been to the NCAA Tournament several years in a row, ironically, with former Miami Coach Leonard Hamilton. The Seminoles coach again has his team headed towards the tournament, with a #16 ranking coming into the ACC Tournament this week.Miami is a different story. They have not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2008, but by most accounts, this year’s team is just one win away from ending that drought. The Hurricanes smoked Georgia Tech in their ACC opener, and now face rival FSU with a spot in the tournament semi-finals on the line. The Seminoles are the betting favorites in the game, but that should not deter the Hurricanes. The last time the two teams met, it was Miami that walked off the court winners. The team that survives tonight will most likely be looking at a third match-up with Duke in the semis. The Seminoles and Hurricanes have both beaten Duke this season.North Carolina has already advanced to the conference semi-finals with a win over Maryland this afternoon. Duke will be taking on Virginia Tech, and North Carolina State and Virginia will do battle to determine the other two teams that will join Carolina and the FSU, Miami, winner, in the semis on Saturday.

Online Gambling and Women in the UK
There has recently been a survey undertaken by an online consumer search and behavior organization, Hitwise. The findings of the research were publicized by the Belle Rock online casino group. The research showed the updated statistics regarding women and online gambling in the United Kingdom. Interestingly, the survey found that the number of female online gamblers in the UK has risen to nearly 50 percent. The Hitwise survey took into account all UK- based online casinos, not only those that form part of the Bell Rock group of online casinos. There was a similar survey done in 2007. Between 2007 and 2010, the number of women participating in online gambling in the UK has increased fourfold, bringing the actual numbers to nearly as much as the men who are gambling online. As of 2011, women now constitute 48.38% of the UK players, with 51.62% being male. The survey notes that this increase in numbers is likely because women feel safer being able to gamble online from the comfort of their own homes, rather than at land based casinos. Many online casino sites and online bingo sites have noticed the trend that more women are taking part in online gambling, and have made sure to offer games and chat rooms that are specially designed with women in mind. There are also whole online gaming sites that have been designed with women in mind. The survey shows that men seem to vary the kind of online gambling that they take part in , and that women tend to stick more to one choice. Men are likely to play online poker, sports betting, online roulette, and other games, while women are more drawn towards games such as online casino slots and also online bingo games. Female bingo players already outnumber the male bingo players by a huge margin.

U.S. Department of Justice Reverses Stance on Online Gambling
Merry Christmas U.S. online gambling!! Last week, right before the Christmas holiday was to begin, U.S. online gamblers got the best present of all. The Department of Justice had changed its stance and is now stating the Wire Act of 1961 only applies to sports betting. Back in July, Senators Harry Reid and Jon Kyl as well as Illinois and New York ask the DoJ to clarify its position regarding online gambling and poker in regards to the Wire Act. With this new official stance, states will now rush to take advantage with new lottery games as well as the possibility of using the same cross state tactics used for the major lottery games to allow online poker back into the United States. According to the office of legal counsel for the Justice Department; We conclude that the Criminal Divisions premise is incorrect and that the Wire Act prohibits only the transmission of communications related to bets or wagers on sporting events or contests. Attorney General Ronald Weich said in a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that; in states that ban various forms of gamblingincluding Internet pokerthe Department will be able to investigate and prosecute those gambling businesses under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act and other sections of the criminal code. With this new stance, even more pressure is on Congress to have legislation in place to regulate online gambling. This change in stance by the DoJ has cleared a path by which individual states can move forward on setting up their own offerings for online gambling. The Poker Players Alliance released a press release where its executive director, John Pappas applauding the clarification and called for Congress to act now, This is a much needed clarification of an antiquated and often confusing law. For years, legal scholars and even the courts have debated whether the Wire Act applies to non-sporting activity. Todays announcement validates the fact that Internet poker does not violate this law. The PPA commends Assistant Attorney General Seitz for recognizing this. However, this ruling makes it even more important that Congress act now to clarify federal law, and to create a licensing and regulation regime for Internet poker, coupled with clear laws and strong enforcement against other forms of gambling deemed to be illegal.

Major League Baseball Redefines Policy On Player Gambling
Major League Baseball has always been strict when it comes to their stance on gambling within their sport. Players and coaches have always been banned from betting on baseball, even if their own teams are not involved. They are serious enough about the issue that they have given a lifetime ban to Pete Rose. The former Phillies and Reds player is, by many accounts, the best hitter to ever play the game. Rose still holds the record for most career hits, but he put himself in danger when he bet on baseball games. When baseball found out about the gambling, they handed down a lifetime ban for Rose. While many have lobbied to have Rose reinstated, Commissioner Bud Selig has stood by the letter of the law on the issue. One area that was undefined is players gambling with illegal bookies. While it is illegal in the US to gamble with an illegal bookie, baseball had no specific rules on the books regarding the practice. The new labor agreement defines the rules, and bans players from gambling on any sport with illegal bookies. The subject has become a sore spot for all sports leagues in the US with the rise in popularity of gambling. Overseas, sports gambling is generally accepted, with some leagues even allowing teams to be sponsored by gambling companies. The US sports leagues, however, remain much more stringent in their desire to keep gambling illegal.Las Vegas is currently the only place in the US where sports gambling is regulated. Sports books in Las Vegas bring in billions of dollars each year, with the biggest event of the year always being the Super Bowl. Last year, nearly $100 million was wagered on the Super Bowl.New Jersey is making a strong push to become the second state to offer their residents places to gamble legally. Senator Raymond Lesniak has led the charge to legalize not only sports betting, but online gambling as well in Atlantic City. The casinos in AC have endorsed both additional forms of gambling at a time when the economy has stripped the city of thousands of gamblers. The new baseball ban on gambling falls under the category of player conduct. In addition to the gambling ban, players can now be disciplined for throwing equipment and for violating federal, state, and local laws. That means that Commissioner Selig will now have a similar authority to suspend and fine players that NBA Commissioner David Stern and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell enjoy.

Atlantic City Casino Revenues Still Plummeting Past Recession End
Even though the recession seems to be over, Atlantic City casino revenues are still on a steady decline. While much of the US is slowly returning back from the effects of the recession, casinos in Atlantic City continue to see steady decline in their revenues. According to statistics from the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, the gaming industry in Atlantic City saw income for July drop five percent from last year’s numbers.Only the Atlantic City Hilton and the Trump Taj Mahal were able to report better business this year than in 2009. Nine other casinos suffered losses from the year previous, and those figures were significantly down from 2008.Casino operators had used the national impact of the recession as a scapegoat for much of Atlantic City’s gaming trouble, but other factors continue to ravage the area’s gambling business. Increased competition in neighboring states has ended New Jersey’s exclusivity on the East Coast, and the convenience of online casinos continues to draw players in anticipation of the opening of the US gaming market.Governor Christie has proposed a state takeover of the city’s gambling district, but it is debatable whether New Jersey will be able to reverse the direction of the devastation simply through better branding and advertising.State Senator Ray Lesniak has led the way on several bold concepts designed to rescue Atlantic City’s gaming business, including challenging the federal ban on sports betting and suggesting intrastate online gambling run by AC casinos, but the measures are opposed by powerful foes both locally and nationally. In the meantime, New Jersey’s dependable cash cow seems to have gone hooves up.

Donald Trump Looking for Legal Online Gambling in U.S.
What is the worst thing that anyone could do to Donald Trumptake money out his pockets and according to him that is exactly what is happening. It seems Mr. Trump, founder of a casino company in Atlantic City, says its time for the United Stated to take steps to approve online gambling. His company, Trump Entertainment Resorts, is making plans to be ready as soon as it happens by establishing its own online betting venue. His company is close to selecting a joint venture partner to help them run an online gambling operation and hopes it will be sitting on the ground floor ready to launch as soon as online gambling is legalized in the United States. Trump said that having the best brand is the key to a successful online gambling site and that We think we have the hottest brand there is, the Trump brand, my personal brand, we think its going to do phenomenally well. The companys CEO Robert Griffin had this to say not only about online gambling but also about the resent set back in New Jersey concerning regulating online gambling; Currently, millions of Americans engage in online gaming with illegal offshore operators, and do so with no oversight, no regulation or no consumer protections. It makes sense for the state of New Jersey to regulate this activity, enforce strict standards to ensure games are fair and safe, and in turn be able to collect tax revenue instead of having those dollars and the jobs they support leaving New Jersey and going illegally overseas. How heroic
Other articles byVicky Coren You are here: Home Poker Articles & Features Vicky Coren Guardian Series: Fifteen men gatecrash the World Series ladies’ event. How heroic Victoria Coren It’s quite fun, this Guardian experiment. They’re having a games slot every day – bridge, chess, that sort of thing – and I’m doing the poker one. It’s aimed at the fairly new player, who might have watched a bit of poker on TV and just started playing with their friends and wants a few tips. So for the moment in the column I’m generally advocating caution and covering basics – it’s a way of trying to help people avoid losing all their money in their first few weeks or months playing the game! If the links are going up on the Hendon Mob page, I hope I don’t get a flood of people shouting at me on the forum – ‘What do you MEAN, pass A9 before the flop?’ and that kind of thing. This isn’t complex stuff to be debated by people who have already been playing for years – it’s just start-up tips and ways not to go broke. Whatever I tell the Guardian, I’d probably stick the lot in with A9 cos I came here to gamble…” Vicky… x (Vicky is sponsored by PokerStars.com.
